My Story

TW: Mention of sexual violence and eating disorder

I am currently the Deputy President (Welfare) at Imperial College Union, and am about to embark on my second term as an elected officer. I have spent the last year fighting for the rights of sexual violence survivors in student disciplinary cases, and doing everything I can to make the process as trauma-informed as possible. I also helped release a survey at the beginning of the last academic year on the prevalence of sexual misconduct at Imperial, which gained over 600 responses in 8 weeks; I then wrote a report on the results of that survey which has been shared with various institutions across the higher education sector, including the Office for Students. Every day I spend countless hours trying to find more ways to fight for those voices which have been silenced.

The reason why I am doing all of this is because I, too, am a survivor of sexual violence. From the moment that it happened, I became so detached from and disgusted with my own body that I developed a severe eating disorder that landed me in hospital multiple times over the next year. I went from being a cross country athlete to barely being able to walk, let alone run. I struggled to fight for my life in an environment that was constantly reopening those wounds, and I lived in constant terror at the thought of crossing paths with the individual who hurt me.

Two years have passed since then, and thanks to the incredible support system I have built along the way through services like RASASC, I am no longer afraid. I have earned my degree and am dedicating my recovery to helping those who have experienced the unimaginable by fighting for change and reform.

RASASC is an incredible orgnaisation that does the following:

  • Supports survivors of all genders over the age of 13 from across Surrey, who have been raped, sexually abused or have had an unwanted sexual experience.
  • Has been supporting survivors of rape and sexual abuse since 1992, 2022 is our 30th year
  • Provides counselling and Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) services, plus a national helpline that operates four days a week (Mon – Thurs).

Please join me in the effort to support survivors by donating to RASASC Guildford Ltd.
